  2. Introduction • Crowds followed Jesus • Some wanted healing • Others wanted political freedom • Few were interested in spiritual needs • What do you expect to find in Jesus?

  3. Jesus sent His disciples to get a donkey for him • Bethany was home to Mary, Martha, and Lazarus • Mark 11:1-6

  4. People welcomed Jesus as the Deliverer • Mark 11:7-10 • Zechariah 9:9 • Crowds welcomed Jesus as the promised Deliverer • Praised Him as one the prophets promised • Most only wanted Jesus to deliver them from Romans

  5. The Jewish leaders’ plan • Mark 14:1-2 • Determined to kill Jesus, but afraid of crowds • Jesus was very popular

  6. Judas planned to betray Jesus • Mark 14:10 • One of Jesus’ twelve disciples • Not concerned about his own sinfulness • Followed Jesus for personal gain (John 12:6) • Had been a close companion for 3 years • Psalm 41:9 • Satan was behind the betrayal • Wanted to destroy Jesus, thwart God’s plan • Mark 14:11 • 30 pieces of silver, price of a common slave (Zech. 11:12-13)

  7. Preparation for Passover • Mark 14:12 • What event were they remembering? • Mark 14:13-15 • Water-carrying was usually left to women • Jesus knew this would happen before it did • Mark 14:16

Jesus knew His betrayer • Mark 14:17-18 • Knew Judas was going to betray Him (without anyone telling Him) • Mark 14:19-20 • Note: Jews often ate together dipping bread into large bowl of sauce/mashed fruit • Table fellowship was sign of genuine friendship • Judas had opportunity to change his mind • Mark 14:21 • “Son of Man” – Jesus was a real man • Horrible deed proved Judas didn’t believe

  10. Conclusion • It’s impossible for us to imagine how much Jesus loved us • He never sinned, yet died for sinners • Everyone needed His sacrifice • Those at the table with him • People in the past, present, and future • You and I
