The Wednesday WarsGary D. SchmidtYear Published 2007Realistic Fiction Juan M. Period 5
Setting • The main settings are Holling’s “perfect “ house and Calmino Junior High. The year is 1967-1968(September-June). The settings are important events happen there. Also the settigs give detail to the story. If the settings were different, it wouldn’t be as good as it is now.
Conflict • The main conflict is Man vs. Self. Holling is forced to do things that he doesn’t want to do and has to make a lot of decisions, and some of them he doesn’t have help with.
Summary of Plot • At the beginning the year is 1967 and Holling Hoodhood has met his teacher Mrs. Baker and thinks that all of the people in Calmino Junior High, she hates his guts. At the middle the conflict arrives and its when Lt T Baker goes MIA. Later on Mrs. Baker receives a telegraph from Lt T Baker that he has been rescued, and comes home at the end of the book.
Theme • Life isn’t the breath you take, just the moments that take your breath away. • Text Evidence 1: “DOWNED HELICOPTER TRANSPORT STOP KHESANH STOP LT T BAKER MISSING IN ACTION STOP” page# 155 • Text Evidence 2: “SWEET EYES STOP OUT OOF JUNGLE STOP OK STOP HOME IN TIME FOR STRAWBERRIES STOP LOVE TY STOP” page# 236 • Text Evidence 3: , and I could hardly hold the thorny stem that Meryl Lee handed to me. But I sure could feel it when she leaned close to me and…
Point of View • The point of view of The Wednesday Wars is first person. If it was third person omniscient we would know what everyone was thinking or just the events.
Symbolism The rose symbolizes the love that Holling and Meryl Lee have. The thorns represent the action that take place during the book. <p><a ="http://www.mothersdaycentral.com/mothers-day-fun/clipart/"><img src="http://www.mothersdaycentral.com/images/clipart/rose-with-thorns.gif" border="0" alt="Rose With Thorns." /></a></p><p><a href="http://www.mothersdaycentral.com/mothers-day-fun/clipart/">Mothers Day Clipart</a> by <a href="http://www.mothersdaycentral.com/">Mothers Day Central</a></p>
Recommendation • I would recommend The Wednesday Wars to people that like to read things that are in the past and to people that just love to read. The book was worth reading because I thought it was addictive and the cliffhangers or the parts that Holling doesn’t tell you is really good.
