ROLE OF ATHLETIC TRAINER • PREVENT ATHLETIC INJURY/ILLNESS • EVALUATE INJURY & ILLNESS • FIRST-AID EMERGENCY CARE • TREAT AND REHABILITATE INJURIES • COUNSEL AND PROVIDE GUIDANCE • CONDUCT EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS • DIRECT CONDITIONING PROGRAMS • ASSIST IN FITTING EQUIPMENT • SUBMIT ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS

  6. ATC QUALIFICATIONS(Prentice and Arnheim, 2005) • PROFESSIONAL • PREPARATION IN ATHLETIC TRAINING FROM AN ACCREDITED PROGRAM • NATA BOARD CERTIFICATION • PERSONAL • GOOD HEALTH AND FITNESS • EMOTIONAL STABILITY AND MATURITY • GOOD INTERPERSONAL SKILLS • COMPASSION AND EMPATHY

  7. THE ATHLETICTRAINING ROOM • ACCESSIBLE • NEAR LOCKER ROOMS • CLEAN AND WELL ORGANIZED • EQUIPPED TO MEET ASSESSMENT AND THERAPEUTIC NEEDS • WELL STOCKED WITH SUPPLIES • PREPARED TO MEET EMERGENCIES

  8. MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES • PROPER CONDITIONING OF ATHLETES • PROTECTIVE SPORTS EQUIPMENT (NOCSAE STANDARDS, PROPER FITTING) • TAPING, BANDAGING, AND PADDING • DIET, NUTRITION, WEIGHT CONTROL • ERGOGENIC AIDS • COUNSELING

  9. SAFETY IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION • GROWTH IN PARTICIPATION NUMBERS • GROWTH IN NUMBER OF INJURIES • INJURY REPORTING SYSTEMS • INJURY SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM (ISS) • NATIONAL ELECTRONIC INJURY SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM (NEISS) • NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL INJURY REGISTRY (NHSIR)

  11. QUESTIONS/DISCUSSION • WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A “SPORT MEDICINE TEAM.” JUSTIFY INCLUDING PEOPLE FROM OUTSIDE THE UNIVERSITY OR SCHOOL. • EXPLAIN WHY ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAMS HAVE A SELECTIVE ADMISSIONS POLICY AS WELL AS AN INCREASINGLY RIGOROUS CURRICULUM.
