The ground was too steep and the soil was too infertile to grow crops. So in 1948 it was planted with coniferous trees to supply timber.
The trees were planted in straight rows. Why do you think this was? This made it easier to cut down the trees.
Every 15 – 20 years every third tree is removed to allow extra growth of the remaining trees.
The trees are felled every 40 – 45 years and the areas replanted.
Can you locate Limavady on your map of Northern Ireland? Once cut down the trees were transported to local saw mills such as the one in Limavady.
