  1. Chapter 2 Assessing needs to identify instructional goal(s)

  2. Backgroud • Perhaps the most critical event in the ID process is identifying the instructional goal. If done improperly, even elegant instruction may not serve the designer’s real purpose. • Two basic methods are used to identify instructional goals: the subject-matter expert approach and the performance technology approach.

  3. Concepts • Performance analysis:It is a study conducted to determine the exact nature of an organizational performance problem and how it can be resolved.

  4. A complete goal statement should describe the following: • The learners • What learners will be able to do in the performance context • The performance context in which the skills will be applied • The tools that will be available to the learners in the performance context

  5. Examples • Leading group discussions • Providing customer service.

  6. Summary • Instructional goals are selected and refined through a rational process that requires answering questions about a particular problem and need, about the clarity of the goal statement, and about the availability of resources to design and develop the instruction.

  7. Practice & Feedback • Write an instructional goal for which you would like to develop a unit of instruction.
