Microsoft's plan to save Bing By: Anthony Cadger
Market shares before bing • Google dominates the search engine world with an 84.2% market share. • Yahoo is the next closest with a measly 7.51%.
Market Shares after Bings Launch • Google still dominates the search engine world with 83.96% share, down just six-tenths of a percentage point. • Bing takes over MSN’s market share and gains about 2%. Still trails Yahoo.
Two years after the launch of Bing • After two years Google still leads and loses only two percentage points. • Bing takes over 2nd place barely squeaking by Yahoo. While doubling their market share, in two years, Bing still only has 8.31%.
Tough Loss so far • Microsoft has lost a staggering $5.5 billion on Bing since the search service launched in June 2009. • Google reported ad revenues of $5.51 billion in quarter 1 of 2009 alone.
Microsoft’s plan • Microsoft plans to use its network of products and partnerships to gain a better understanding of what the user is after when they enter a query into a Bing search box. • For example, a search for flight info will tell you when the best day is to purchase a plane ticket. • Bing Shopping lists products from more than 540 online retailers like Lenovo, HP Home & Home Office Store, Buy.com, Zappos, etc. • Congregating search info, Hotel Accommodations, Flight timings, local tourist attractions, etc. • Through its search partnerships with Facebook and its use with various Microsoft products, Bing will gradually gain understanding of the Web. Attempting to transform searches from today's noun-based keyword entry's to eventually giving Bing the ability to field questions phrased in natural human language. “Microsoft can not and will not try to "out-Google" Google. Instead, we must change the game fundamentally.“ - Microsoft President of Online Services, Qi Lu
