Break-out session 4: Group 4 Chair: Ayieko Monica Rapporteur: Martin Orla Transition Team member: Jakob Rhyner Participants: • Dziba, Luthando • Enow, Achuo A • Francis, Julius • Hewitson, Bruce • Matose, Frank • Maure, Genito Amos • Midgley, Guy • Thombiano, Adjima
Future Earth should develop strong regional “nodes”: What does that mean? Proposed two models: • Committee model • Constitute a committee that will represent the interest of Africa. • Example: WCRP • Host model • Appoint institution(s) to host direct the activities of African node • Similar to NRF and ANR hosting Belmont Forum secretariat
2. How do we make that happen? • Committee model • African countries should nominate qualified potential members. • Global secretariat should select the committee members taking into consideration research and regional representation • Coordnating Model • Put a call and interested institutions should apply.
3. How do we fund it? • Three options: • Hosting countries • Membership fee • Global Secretariat of Future Earth should take the responsibility of looking for funders
Future Earth should develop strong regional “nodes”: 4. Where do we start? What are the next steps? • Participants of this workshop should consulted going forward, e.g. for comments on draft call for nominations for regional committee (terms of reference, etc.) • African groups that are not represented here (i.e. industries) should be consulted in further Future Earth programmes, such as the Africa conference next year. • Other International organizations should be consulted through the global secretariat: African can learn from them, they can learn from Africa
Future Earth should develop strong regional “nodes”: 6. What would the vision for a Future Earth African node be? What would it have to achieve in the next 10 years in order to be considered a success story? • Increasing African ownership • Communicate priority research to the government and other funding bodies • Scientific goal: establish path to economic development in Africa • Strengthen the local activities, not competing with them • Coordinating and networking in Africa • Changing the mind-set towards achieving the future earth we want • Citizens, decision makers, institutional frameworks • Financial resources (local and international) • Capacity building • More that just giving bursaries • Experimental knowledge • Projects should be driven from the continent • A new generation of leadership in place • Grand challenge initiatives (i.e. Earth system Modelling)
