Taiwan’s TWAREN Initiative Fay Sheu c00yzs00@nchc.gov.tw National Center for High-performance Computing Science-based Industrial Park Hsinchu, Taiwan
The TWAREN Initiative • A comprehensive, 6-year national development plan formulated by the government to foster creativity and develop talents • Will cost an estimated US$75 billion starting 2003. • Serves as the infrastructure that enables new possibilities in R&D, global collaboration and learning, discoveries and innovation … • Serves as part of the mechanisms to train manpower, create jobs, spur economic growth and strengthen competitiveness.
Future Infrastructure Drives Today’s Research Agenda • The success story of the NSFnet is inspirational • TWAREN will be a new all-optical network with 10 Gigabit Ethernet and DWDM technology at its core • A backbone of 40-100 Gbps will encircle 1000 km along Taiwan’s coastal areas • Connects universities and colleges as well as research institutions all throughout the island
Core Nodes in Science Parks • Four core nodes are strategically located at science parks to serve industrial R&D besides academic research • The NCHC, situated in Hsinchu, where semiconductor and electronic industries dominate the Park, already has a branch office down south. Will set up one more office in central Taiwan.

Linking R&E Community to the World • Three domestic networks invest heavily in international connectivity: • TANet2 – funded by the National Science Council, a research network ran by the NCHC. • TANet – funded by the Ministry of Education, serves higher education and K-12 concerns • ASnet – supported by various sources, services researchers in Academia Sinica and clientele outside the campus • International connectivity will be further expanded in a joint effort

General Applications • TWAREN will provide a high bandwidth, high-efficiency network to support research and development • At home, it serves as a far-reaching platform for research and learning • Going overseas, we will enhance connectivity to allow collaborative research, in e-Science and e-Learning • Language education is especially emphasized. English is a major focus.
