  2. 6 major nutrients 1. Carbohydrates – starches and sugars that provide the body with most of its energy 2 types of carbohydrates - simple – fruits, milk, honey, table sugar - complex – (Starches) breads, pasta, rice, potatoes, corn Body breaks starch down and converts to sugar

  3. 6 major nutrients • 2. Proteins – essential nutrients uses to repair body cells and tissues • 2 types – • Complete • Incomplete • Complete – contain all 9 essential amino acids • Found in foods such as – milk, eggs, and fish • come from animals

  5. 6 major nutrients • 3. Vitamins – substances that help to regulate the body’s functions • 2 types • Water soluble – C, and many B vitamins • Dissolve in water, must be replaced every day Fat Soluble – Vitamins A,D,E,K - Body stores vitamins in fat until needed - Get from fruits and vegetables

  9. Manage your weight through exercise • Try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least 5 day a week

  10. Eat Plenty of Grains, Vegetables and Fruits • Foods in the 3 bottom of the pyramid provide energy as well as vitamins and minerals to be healthy • FIBER – part of grains, fruits, and vegetables that the body cannot break down

  11. Cut down on the fats • 30% or less of your total calories should be fat

  12. Avoid too much sugar

  14. Watch the sodium and salt
