We will discuss where accessory nutrients are being sold, price and whether GMPs are ever mentioned. Focus of the Seminar
Where have you heard this acronym before? What does it stand for? What does it mean? Not to be confused with GMOs which are what??? Remind Me… What are GMPs?
Regulations governing the preparation, packing, and holding of dietary supplements under conditions that ensure their safety. What government agency enforces these? Good Manufacturing Practices
An accessory nutrient is something other than a vitamin, mineral or herb that we can supplement with. An accessory nutrient would be taken to help enhance health, although not “essential” (necessary). The Accessory Nutrients

What are some important flavonoids? • Quercitin • Citrus bioflavonoids • Green tea polyphenols • Proanthrocyanidins
Additional accessory nutrients • Fiber supplements • Gamma-oryzanol • Lipoic acid • Medium-chain triglycerides • S-adenosylmethione (SAM)
Essential Fatty Acids • Two EFAs • linolenic (an 18-carbon omega 3) • linoleic (an 18-carbon omega 6) • Omega 3 fatty acids: • ALA - soybean oil, flax, canola oil, walnuts • Good • EPA/DHA - cold water fish • Really, really good - BEST! • Eat more of these! • Omega 6 fatty acids: • Wheat germ, nuts, plant oils (corn, safflower, cottonseed). • Our diets have far too many of these.

Summary: Accessory Nutrients • Defined: • Nonessential nutrients that may play a role in chronic disease prevention. • Research – know what and in what quantity has been proven to be beneficial. • Get independent research – not that which the company selling the product supplies. • Look for GMPs. • Know why you are taking them.
