Migrant Slum Children • Children of Migrant Labor • Shuttle between sites, or city and village (Bihar, Bengal, Nepal) • Interrupts education, Slip behind • Govt. school admits by age • Children in Slums, Villages • Inadequate, crowded schools • Parents don’t value education • Rural digital divide • Sshrishti • 2003: Sanghamitra Bose: Home lessons for slum children • 2004 Sep: Learning Center*: UKG-II, Kishangarh, Delhi • 4 other initiatives (one in NOIDA), 750 students total • 6 rural computer centers: Haryana, Rajasthan, UP, Delhi • Budget growth: Rs 1.5 lakh 2005 to Rs 35 lakh 2011 * Only this component is funded (45%) by Asha SSHRISHTI LEARNING CENTER NEW DELHI

Vision & Mission • Vision • To make a literate India where each child has equal opportunities and enjoys their childhood with love and laughter, learning, and preparing for a life of dignity. • Mission • Bridge the educational divide through modern learning centers, which will meet the specific needs of the children of the migrant laborers. • Bridge the digital divide that exists between the impoverished remote villages and the cities by opening computer centers in villages. • To fight social inequity and ensure each child gets his or her birthright. Project Highlights • SLC • UKG to II, then most to govt., few to private schools • Students: 83, ~30/year admitted to govt. school • Teachers: 4 + 1 computer + 1 part-time music/dance • English, Hindi, Math, Computers, Environment Sci. • Music, Dance, Recitation, Sports, Theater, Quiz • Milk in the morning, Mid-day meal • Low-cost books, stationery, uniforms, toys • Other • Remedial afternoon classes • Annual day, excursions, checkups, festivals, workshop SSHRISHTI LEARNING CENTER NEW DELHI
