Game Preparation • Arrive together and leave together • Pre game talk before every game • Walk field • Check game equipment • Talk to timer, chain crew and ball person • Look at teams during warm ups • Weather conditions? • Are you prepared to check ball inflation or cleats?
Communication With Coach • Introduce crew • Ask coach standard questions • Line judge and linesmen talk to their head coaches about the sideline area, football person, get back coach, and reporting of fouls • Treat everyone with respect and expect the same • Start a line of communication early
Game Time • Formations • Read your keys • Position – be there! – Hustle • Area of responsibility • Fouls – give all the information needed. • Make it be there • Can you eat your flag? • Control your sideline – remind them early • Scoring breaks • Post game evaluations

What is Officiating • Standing on the field listening to the National Anthem • The 8x8 dressing room with no shower • The long drive to the game, reviewing rules, and having time for a joke or two • Bringing along an extra pair of socks in case someone forgets • Leading by example – hard work & sportsmanship • Working through the sore muscles and bad knees • For the love of the game - Becoming an AOS member • For the Money, the Chicks and the One liners!
One Officials Mantra Black and white. It’s not just my uniform. It’s my mantra. Out here, there is only yes or no. No maybes. Gray areas do not exist. Indecision does not survive. I must make split second decisions. I must have supreme confidence. There is no replay. No deliberation. Just my crew, my whistle and me.
