  1. X-Ray Detectors Stefan Moeller

  2. Overview • LCLS presents detector challenges • Signal comes in large pulses (many photons) • Pulse rep rate at 120Hz • Dynamic range/ low noise >requires significant R&D for new detectors • Detector programs: LCLS and LUSI

  3. 1.6.05 X-Ray Detectors • Four detector prototypes planned: • Beam Imaging • Beam Intensity • Streak Camera • 2-D X-ray Detector

  4. LCLS Detector Advisory Committee (LDAC) • Advises and reviews LCLS and LUSI detector development projects • Meets regularly (1st. Meeting Febr./March ’05) Next early 2006 • Members: • G. Derbyshire (Rutherford Appleton Lab.) (Chair) • L. Strueder (MPI Extraterrestrische Physik, Garching) • E. Eikenberry (Paul-Scherrer-Institut, SLS) • Y. Amemiya (Univ. Tokyo) • E. Heijne (CERN) • A. Walenta (Univ. Siegen)

  5. Based on LDAC comments LCLS decided to: Proceed with 2 D Detector program at Cornell Initiate a 2nd pixel detector at BNL (LUSI) Start a streak camera project with LBNL Assign detector projects to specific experiments Develop detector specifications matched to experimental requirements

  6. 2D X-Ray Detector Program Detector Specifications: 2D Pixel array detector FY05 phase based on generic specs FY06: Specifications will be defined to meet the requirements of the Single Bio Molecule Imaging Experiment (no impact on cost or schedule)

  7. 2D Detector Development Plan Overview

  8. 2D Detector: Summary of completed tasks for 2005 Initial concept of pixel architecture Design of electronics (pixel and component level) Layout of CMOS Design and layout of test structures 1st prototype schematics 1st prototype layout First prototype submission to MOSIS fabrication* Design and fabrication of test electronics* Test of prototype performance* * ongoing

  9. Plans for FY06 • Schedule Design Review (Jan./Feb. 06) • Extend Contract for second year (TA) • Establish detailed schedule for FY06 • Refine and detail specs, cost and schedule, milestones • End of 2nd year: Major Design Review

  10. X-ray Streak Camera Initiate R&D contract with LBNL Plan to start R&D program in FY06 Visit LBNL soon Develop specifications, MOU/TA

  11. XES Detector Status 2D Detector Project is on schedule Initiate Streak Camera Project with LBNL in FY06 Imaging and Intensity Detectors to start FY07 Hiring of Detector Engineer soon (Jan. 07)
