  7. Hispanic Not considered a race Can be Hispanic and any race Breakdowns in some tables • Cuban • Puerto Rican • Mexican • Spanish • Various Latin American Countries

  8. Race Comparability with 1990 Census • 2000 Asian and 2000 Hawaiian and Pacific Islander must be compressed with 1990 Asian and Pacific Islander • 2000 multiple races means 2-3% of data is not comparable with 1990 • Possibility that “Other” in 1990 were Hispanic and show up as another race in 2000 because of question location

  24. Census Data Formats American Factfinder http://factfinder.census.gov/ FTP http://ftp2.census.gov/plmap/ http://ftp2.census.gov/census_2000/ CD/DVD in Documents Center Go 2000 Software (Census) Geolytics (Commercial)

  25. American Factfinder Advantages http://factfinder.census.gov/ Accessible from home at all hours (we hope!) • Tract/block maps for entire country • Simple thematic maps • All data sets • Can mix types of geography (e.g. U.S., state, county and six tracts)

  26. American Factfinder Disadvantages http://factfinder.census.gov/ • Limited to 500 geographies (cannot get all tracts in large counties) • Tables can be too wide to print (experimental transposition available) • Cannot choose individual variables in a table (e.g. just males rather than individual counts of both males and females) • Tables cannot be combined on screen (must use spreadsheet)

  27. Initial Factfinder Screen http://factfinder.census.gov/

  28. Brief Facts Option (middle top of screen) http://factfinder.census.gov/ • Quick Tables • Identify brief data for the nation, ONE state, county, or Indian reservation • Geographic Comparison Tables • Brief comparison of states, counties or cities • In the Data Sets Menu, QTs and GCTs also include • Census tracts, zip codes, MSAs, and Congressional Districts
