State/Support/Explain Paragraph Review. STATE.
E N D
STATE • First, you need to state your opinion. Leave out “I think” or any other “I”. We already know it is your opinion, so leave it out. This is a good place to make an observation about a character or a novel theme. You should also include the T.A.G. (title, author, and genre) in your state. A good “state” about a novel theme might sound something like this: • The short story, “Unbalanced,” by William Sleator reveals that jealousy causes a person to act in a violent and appallingly selfish way.
SUPPORT • Choose a “juicy” quote proving your opinion (your “state”). • You will know it is a “juicy” quote if can squeeze your own interpretation out of it and it does not state the obvious. • Rather than choosing a quote that tells you a fact, find a quote that makes an observation. • In addition to the quote, you need to provide sufficient background information, so that someone who has not read the story could understand the quote. • Be careful: Don’t get side-tracked, and remember: your focus for the paragraph is not to summarize the story!
EXPLAIN • You already stated your opinion. You already supported it with a quote that backs it up. Now, show me you have thought about this information. • When you explain your quote, you show your own original thinking and interpretation. • Do not just restate the quote! • Make sure you explain how it relates to your topic sentence/opinion and expand on that idea.
Your task: • Write an organized paragraph reflecting on either the motif your group covered or a major theme in Out of the Dust. Choose one of these options to demonstrate your understanding of the novel: • Option 1: Explain the deeper symbolic meaning of your assigned motif. • Option 2: Explain a major theme in the novel. What universal lesson does the reader learn and how does the author reveal this theme?
