  1. Spheres of the Earth Unit 1, Section 2

  2. Essential Questions • What is Earth Science and how do the three spheres of the Earth interact?

  3. Spheres of the Earth • Lithosphere • Atmosphere • Hydrosphere • Biosphere

  4. Lithosphere • Litho = Rock, Stone • The solid, rocky crust covering the entire planet • Made up of continents as well as smaller landmasses called islands • Extends under the ocean floor • Surface varies from place to place

  5. Atmosphere • Mixture of gases that surrounds the planet • Most abundant gases are nitrogen and oxygen, but the atmosphere contains water vapor, carbon dioxide and other gases • When water vapor condenses, it forms clouds

  6. Hydrosphere • Hydro = water • Earth’s oceans, lakes, rivers and ice • Consist mostly of the salt water in the ocean (97%), but fresh water is also a part (3%) • Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface

  7. Biosphere • Bio = Life • All living things • Extends into each of the other spheres

  8. Spheres of the Earth Unit 1, Section 2
