Part I Listening and Speaking Activities 1. Brainstorming Expressions for reference:
1.Expressions for describing general impressions of a person. • 1). Positive expressions: polite, smart, cute, nice, gentle, charming, generous, creative, optimistic, hospitable, upright(正直的)
2). Negative expressions: clumsy, rude, careless, stupid, coarse, underhand(阴险的), sneaky(卑劣的), dishonorable(无耻的), violent, gossipy, devilish=like the devil, devious(不坦率的),wise guy (傲慢自大的家伙)
3). Neutral expression: funny, sensitive, forgetful, outspoken(率直的,直言不悔的), restless(不安的)
2.Expressions for describing someone’s emotional changes 1). Changes for the better: calm, unruffled ,cool, cheer up, feel better, peaceful, cheerful, be sympathetic with.
2). Changes for the worse: feel nervous, get angry, become anxious, have butterflies in the stomach, get panicky\panic, be horrified, feel guilty, be embarrassed,disappointed.
3. Expressions for behavior 1). Silly behavior: play the fool, make a fool of oneself, be up to no good, mess/fool around(wasting one’s time, behaving foolishly. behave badly, get into trouble.
2). Good behavior: be as good as gold (of children, behaving very well), set a good example to sb., turn over a new leaf, behave oneself, do good deeds, be a good modal. 3). Neutral behavior: behave, conduct oneself, behave normally.
4. Expressions for social positions or titles: headmaster, dovtor, nurse, teacher, supervisor, composer, pilot, airhostess, hairdresser,coach, president, chaitman/chairwoman, prefessor, singer.
5. Expressions for commenting on personalities: can’t stand, (can’t) put up with, it takes all sorts(to make a world) (世间上什么人都有), To err is human, to forgive is divine(人孰 无过,宽恕为上), (someone’s silly behavior) almost bring down the house, arouse hilarious laughte, be disgusted at/with.
★ Speaking Practice:Get the Ss to do the pair-work, describing people they know and their behavious. And try to use the words and phrases in brainstorming. ★ Listening
1). Introduce the task and get the Ss to read the topic and the four questuins, guessing the possible meaning of the listening material. 2). Dicussing the meaning of the following terms. A: wrinkled=refers to the lines in something which is folded or crushed, especially on the skin when a person is old.
B: attach to= to come to; to cause to join as a member of in action. 3). Ask the Ss to get ready to write down some key words to the questions. 4). Play the tape twice for the Ss to listen 5). Check the Ss’ answers as so to see their understanding
Part 2 Reading Comprehension 1. Discussing time 1). Have you ever been haunted by a guilty conscience for something you accidentally did? 2). What do you think is the best policy if you have unintentionally committed a folly?
2.Comprehension work • A.Summarize the story: • The kindly and gentle minister decided to retire from the ministry because his clumsiness brought about two accidents which made him suffer from a guilty conscience.
B. Summarise the paragraphs The first paragraph: It is a general description of the narrator’s great-uncle and his accidental killing of a small dog because of his clumsiness. The third paragraph: It is an account of how his lumsiness led to trouble mess in the guest room during his visit to the lady.
The fourth paragraph: It describes how the narrator’s great-uncle damaged a beautiful candelabra when he rushed downstairs.
C. Study the story Discuss the following questions 1). How does the narrator describe her great- uncle?
Her great –uncle was a full-time Baptist minister and his only fault was his clumsiness. He was a very large man, who was over 6 feet and weighed close to 300 pounds. On the whole the narrator thinks of her great-uncle as a wonderful, jolly and beloved man. He was kindly,gentle, and well-educated.
2). What was his first accident ? What was his feeling? Whe he was visiting a woman in Dillon, the Baptist minister inadvertently sat on the woman’s dog and unfortunately killed it. When he realized what he had done, the narrator’s great-uncle was devastated, but could not bring himself to tell her about it. He slipped the dead dog into her coat pocket.
3). What was his second accident ? Five years later when the narrator’s great-uncle revisited the woman’s house, he was welcomed and put up for one night. In the night, he get up to open the window and knocked over a bottle of ink in the process. Then, gropping along the walls for the light, he covered the fresh wallpaper with huge black ink blobs and smudged the crisp new curtains with his huge palm prints. The next morning when he woke up and found what had happened, he rushed downstairs and his foot slipped. Reaching for support he accidentally grabbed the beautiful candalabra nearby and ripped it from the wall.
4). Why did the Baptist minister say to the woman “Twinkie had a Christian burial”? During his visit, the Baptist minister meant to tell the woman what had happened to Twinkle. He was conscience-stricken for having kept her in the dark for almost five years. Now, he resolved to clear his conscience by telling the truth. He also hoped that he would be redeemed by faithfully performing his duty of guiding the soul of the dog to heaven.
