  2. Heading Poetry 2 Mr. Dunne • 24thSeptember

Last time, in English Class. • We took a look at ‘Ten Little Schoolchildren’. • We examined the use of verbs, rhyme and alliteration in poetry. • You attempted to create your own poem. • You had homework – I’ll be checking it during class but we’re going to continue on, do some exercises and get you settled in first.

  4. Today • We’re going to examine a super cool new type of poetry known as Acrostic poetry. • We’re going to do some fun tasks involving your first name and random words that you like.

  5. Learning Objectives • By the end of this class, you shall both be aware of and be able to create an Acrostic poem.

  6. Last weeks poem • What we looked at last week was a rhyming list poem. • It was made up of couplets. Couplet – a pair of lines that rhyme. • It was a list poem because it counted down • 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, NONE.

  9. The next type of poem we shall be examining is an Acrostic Poem Acrostic poem: A poem in which certain letters in each line form a word or words. (spies use this)

  16. To create an acrostic poem • You need a word or words to use as a title. For example - your first name, Jack, John, Jill. • You need to write down each letter on a new line. • You need to think of a word or sentence that captures the essence of the title for each line.

  17. So, to make sure you have the concept,what are the titles of these poems? Tan Athletic Resourceful Zooms Assertive Nimble Eager to learn Makes time to read Marvelous artist Adores her white poodle

  18. Your turn • Your first name or a nickname, however many letters it is. • One word per letter. • I will help you find nice complimentary words. • Things that help here. A dictionary or goggle.

  19. Next • A word. I used ‘hello’ so not that word please. • It cannot start with the same letter as the name you used before. • You can use your favourite word, a word in your copy or that you heard today in another class. • Use sentences instead of single words in the poem. (Hint: emotions and actions are nice ways to start new lines)

  20. Homework • S • K • I • P • A • L • I • N • E • Write a message, a small sentence as the title, using a Acrostic poem. • Remember to leave a space between words because their is no such word as skipaline.
