Balance • Is concerned with arranging art elements in an artwork so no one part of that work overpowers, or seems heavier than any other part.
Three Types of Balance • Formal balance- when one half of the work mirrors the other half • -Informal balance-balance of unlike objects or elements - Radial balance- When elements of art or objects in an artwork are positioned around a central point
Formal Balance Assignment • 1) Pick a picture from a magazine that is symmetrical. • 2) Cut it in half down the middle • 3) Glue half of the picture onto a piece of paper • 4) Draw the other half of the picture to make a complete symmetrical picture
Radial Balance Assignment • 1) Divide your plate into eight evenly spaced pieces. • 2) Create a focal point by drawing a geometric shape in the middle • 3) Next draw a shape or design in one of the pie shapes. Repeat the design on the other radii as you turn your circle. Continue adding more shapes on your radii. Keep up the radial design. • 4)Color in your design
Variety • Variety is concerned with combining art elements by adding slight changes to increase the visual interest
Harmony in Art • Harmony is the principle of art concerned with combining similar art elements to create a pleasing appearance
Harmony in Art Assignment • Using the same color scheme use water colors to create a harmonious picture
Emphasis in Art • Emphasis is the principal of art concerned with making an element or object in an artwork stand out
Proportion in Art • Proportion is the manner in which the parts of a work relate to each other and to the whole
Proportion Assignment • 1) Chose a partner so that you can draw each other • 2) Make a sketch of your subject • 3) Use proportion to express a personality trait of the person. • 4) Color in your portrait using oil pastels and create a border around the portrait.
Pattern in Art • A pattern refers to a two dimensional decorative effect achieved through the repetition of colors, lines, shapes and or textures. • Assignment-design pieces of clothing and create patterns on them
Movement in Art • Movement is the principal of art used to create the look and feel of action and to guide the viewer’s eye throughout a work of art
Movement in art assignment • On a note card design a 3-D picture that looks as if it is moving.
Rhythm in Art • Rhythm is the repetition of an element to make a work seem active
Tessellation Assignment • 1) Cut out a shape at the end of a note card. • 2) Tape the end to the opposite end of the card • 3) Cut out a shape on the side of the note card. • 4) Tape the side to the opposite side of the card. • 5) Trace the card onto a piece of white construction paper so that the piece is continuous. • 6) Decide what the picture looks like and color it in to look like a actual object.
