A quick review • As you will recall, yesterday we took a look at 6 breeds of Medium Wool Sheep, what were they? • Cheviot, Dorset, Finnsheep, Hampshire, Montadale, and the Oxford breed. • Can you recall any of the specific characteristics of these sheep breeds? • A little farther back, what were some of the ways that sheep are classified?
So, for today… • We will be taking a look at more breeds of Medium Wool type sheep. • We will identify important characteristics about them. • Some breeds, we will look more in depth at, than the others. • At the end, we will have a small identification quiz.
Shropshire • Originated in England. • Imported to the United States (Virginia) in 1855. • Characteristics: • The face, ears, and legs, range in color from dark brown to soft black. • Dual Purpose breed, good carcass weight, and a desirable wool weight.
Southdown • Originated in Sussex County, England. • Imported into the US in 1803. • Considered small to medium in size, out of the Medium wool type sheep.
Characteristics of Southdown • Color Chracteristics of Southdowns include: • Face, legs, and ears area mouse brown (light brown) color. • Wool covers the face and legs • Both sexes are polled, although rams have scurs. • Mature Southdowns are medium on size. • They have short legs, wide chests, straight tops, deep twists, and bulging rear quarters. • Great carcass quality and body confirmation. Grow quickly, as do they reach market quickly. (6-12 weeks old) Also called a ‘Hothouse Lamb.’
Suffolk • Originated in England. • Introduced to the United States in 1888. • Black hairs, as you can see, are present in the wool in as well, making the wool undesirable.
Characteristics of the Suffolk • The color characteristics of the Suffolk sheep include: • Black face, legs, and ears. • The face, legs, and ears, are free from wool; making the Suffolk easy to identify. • Both sexes are polled. • The Suffolk is a large breed sheep. • Ewes are prolific, and usually have a 150% or better lamb crop.
Tunis • Originated in Northern Africa (Tunisia). • The US imported the Tunis breed in 1799. • Characteristics: • Tan or Red colored face. • Long drooping ears and head is free from wool. • Mate during almost any season. • One of the oldest, and smallest breeds.
