  2. Big Question What are the risks in helping others?

  3. Sequence • Sequence is the order that events happenin a selection. When you read, think aboutwhat comes first, next, and last. • Several events can occur at the same time.Words such as meanwhile and during giveclues that two events are happening at thesame time. • You can remember sequence by makinga time line.

  4. Vocabulary Canteen Rebellion Confederacy Stallion Glory Union Quarrel

  5. Canteen • A container that holds drinks

  6. Confederacy • A group of people, states, or countries that work together

  7. Glory • Praise, honor

  8. Quarrel • A fight

  9. Rebellion • A conflict that leads to war

  10. Stallion • A male horse

  11. Union • States that are united as one country

  12. Literary Nonfiction • Tells the story of a true event. It sometimes uses elements that are usually used in fiction, such as dialogue, illustrations, descriptions, and character thoughts.

  13. Explore • What did African American soldiers do during the Civil War? • Where and when did they fight? • What risks did African American soldiers take?

  14. Guide Questions • Reread half of page 211. Use words such as first, next, then, and finally to list the event that happened. • How do pages 210 and 211 give the reader hints or clues about the events that will happen later in the story?

  15. Guide Questions • What do Sergeant Carney and Ned, the • drummer boy, have in common? How are they different? • Compare and contrast Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and Carney and Ned. Use the text to support. • Do you think the officers expect that some soldiers will die? • Have you ever witnessed an inspiring speech? Discuss what you think Shaw talked about with his soldiers.
