Getting Ready • Open a new Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet document. Enter the following: • In cell A1, enter: Day • In cell B2, enter: Amount • In cells A2 to A32, enter the number 1 through 31 • In cell B2, enter 0.01 (the value of a penny) • In cell A34, enter: Total
Getting Ready • Resize column B to make it about twice as wide as column A. • Move you mouse in the headed area where the letters A, B, and C are. • Move your mouse into the line directly between B ad C. • Click and drag to the right to make column B larger.
Formatting Cells • Click and drag to select cells B2 to B34. • On the Home tab, go to the Number group (bottom right corner), and click on the drop down arrow. The “Format cells” window should open. • Click the number tab • Choose the Currency options, Symbol $, and then click Ok.
Entering the Formulas • Click into cell B3. • Enter the formula: =B2*2 • Click into cell B34 • Enter the formula: =Sum(B2:B32)
Filling Down the Formulas • Click into cell B3. • Look for the small square in the lower right corner of the cell. • Click and drag and small square down to cell B32. • Save in Excel folder as Powerpenny.
Critical Thinking- Conclusion • Look at the total in cell B34. • How surprised are you by the result? Answer this question in a textbox (Textbox: Click on the Insert tab, textbox, and draw a textbox on your spreadsheet.)
Extra Credit • You may choose to work with a partner(s). • Try the same strategies/ formulas using: • Nickel (on sheet 2) • Dime (on sheet 3) • Quarter (on sheet 4) • Dollar (on sheet 5)
