Road Safety - Global Context • WHO estimates • 1.3 million deaths, 50 million injuries per year • 2.4 million deaths by 2030 • #2 cause of death in 4 – 29 year olds (2002) • 85% of casualties in low and middle income countries • Incalculable pain and suffering • $65 billion per year financial cost in low and middle income countries – and growing fast This $65 billion is a prize that we can win by investing in road safety ..and if we do not, we will continue pay the price

  3. Road Safety – Global Context • 2 May - Cyclone Nargis, Myanmar, over 100,000 dead and 2 million homeless • 12 May - Sichuan earthquake, 55,000 dead, 25,000 missing, 5 million displaced • Every two months the roads take the same toll on humanity.
