Aerobic respiration needs O2. Myoglobin is the temporary storage of O2. Liver will change lactic acid into glucose(or glycogen), but that needs ATP and all the ATP is being used in the muscles. So lactic acid builds up.
Lactic Acid • Builds up during anaerobic respiration (glycloysis) • Excess lactic acid lowers pH and decreases response of proteins = fatigue • Decrease in electrolyte concentration = uncontrolled nervous stimulation = cramping
Athletes: • Training builds up glycolysis enzymes • With more efficient glycolysis and more O2 because of better capillary beds • More mitochondria for ATP production
