Discover the factors influencing sound properties such as speed, loudness, and pitch. Learn about sound waves in air, speed of sound, and how our ear allows us to hear different frequencies.

Journal – Read/Summarize pages 390 to 391 • What Factors affect the speed of Sound? • What affects how loud a sound is?
Properties of sound • Sound waves in air spread out in all directions away from the source. • Sound travels through the air at room temperature about 346 m/s (760 mi/h)
Factors that affect Speed of Sound • Temperature • Type of Medium • See chart page 391
What determines how loud or what pitch a sound wave makes? • Loudness is determined by the energy in the wave which we see in the amplitude of a wave. The higher the amplitude the more energy and the louder a sound is. • Loudness is also determined by distance. http://library.thinkquest.org/19537/Physics3.html http://www.fi.edu/fellows/fellow2/apr99/soundvib.html
What determines the Pitch or tone of a sound? • Frequency Natural frequency - when an object vibrates naturally on its own.
