Basic Functions of a Student Intern These are simple suggestions! Don’t forget to constantly communicate with your intern!
1. Working with students • Have the intern sit next to a student or group of students that need attention or extra assistance regularly • An intern can help a student with work, but should NEVER do the work for the student • Allow the intern to be in charge of a small group during small group time.
2. Teaching OpportunitiesInterns should have the opportunity to teach to the extent that you feel comfortable. • Work together – co-teaching has worked well in the past • Allow the intern to learn from experience. They will improve with positive feedback from you. • Teaching a small group is less intimidating for the intern (especially when they teach for the first time) • Please allow the intern to teach a lesson at least one time per quarter. (Especially for their quarter projects!)
3. Assisting a class with multiple special needs students • The intern should roam around the room and assist with reading, hands-on tasks, and basic organization for those students
4. Assisting the teacher • Clerical work assistance • Grading papers • Recording grades • Setting up for labs or projects • Creating bulletin boards • Organizing areas of the room
Do’s for your Intern • Keep them busy at all times • Give them goals at the beginning of the semester (now is OK) • Have them help keep your room organized • NOTE: Some clerical work is necessary, but realize that the intern is learning the most when they are directly working with you and your students inside the classroom.
Ideas • Get creative! Have them create folders for students who are absent – make them in charge of getting absent students caught up. • Have your intern recognize a “Student of the Month” for your class. The intern can write a letter home, put up a display, etc. • Have your intern go over homework with your students
Are there times when you can’t think of anything for your intern to do? Some ideas: • Have your intern take notes on the lesson, presentation or video • Could your intern observe another teacher in the school? (A different grade, the special education resource room, etc.) • Have your intern research a topic of your choice that you will be covering in class and/or have them prepare for a future lesson • Have your intern update worksheets and/or activities – you can give them specific directions or leave it up to them! • Have your intern help you utilize and bring technology into the classroom – most interns are very technologically savvy!
