  2. What Debating Is All About Debating is Basically About 3 things (could be 4): • Persuading People • Convincing People • Educating People Through Your Arguments • Winning(Optional)

  3. Definition • A definition should be FAIR and DEBATABLE. • Fair means it is understandable by an average reasonable person.Not Truism, Time and Place Setting, or Squirelling • Debatable means the other team can debate based on that definition

  4. Theme Line • The main reason why you agree or disagree to the motion. • The thing that based your whole case • Your burden of proof

  5. Team Splits • Segmentation of case • Important stuff comes first • Defines the big picture of the whole case.

  6. Argument Construction A good argument consists of: • Assertion • Reasoning • Evidence • Logical Link

  7. Rebuttals • Should attack opponent’s case while defending own case at the same time. • Should be linked back to your own case • Prove the other way around instead of just saying no • Also delivered in A-R-E-L

  8. Points Of Information • Questions, facts, or statements given during the opponent’s speech with the purpose of attacking their case • Can be accepted or rejected • Don’t do it to often, you might be considered barracking/badgering • Thumb rule: Accept 2 POIs

Speaker’s Role 1st Government: (7.20) • Provide a ground • Provide a definition • Provide a theme line • Bring up first part of case 1st Opposition: (7.20) • Bring rebuttals to Government’s case • Decide whether the definition will be accepted or not • Provide a theme line • Bring up first part of case

  10. Speaker’s Role 2nd Speaker both Government and Opposition: (7.20) • Bring rebuttals • Rebuild case • Bring up 2nd part of case

  11. Speaker’s Role 3rd Speaker both Government and Opposition: (7.20) • Bring up rebuttals • Clarify case • Give summary

  12. Speaker’s Role Reply Speaker both Government and Opposition: (4.20) • Show good points of the case • Point out opponent’s flaws • Show Point of Clashes • Explain why you should win

  13. Rules and Regulations ● Speaking time for speeches is 7.20 minutes and reply speeches is 4.20 minutes ● Team Winning Priority : Victory Point, Average Team Score, and Margin

  14. Motions: • THBT Indonesian Work Force must be abolished. • THBT living together brings harm than good. • TH would put the moral education into curriculum. • THBT the House of Representative will work better by having their new building. • THBT alcohol must be banned.
