Plot is defined as “the series of events that make up the story.” • A plot has several stages: • Exposition: the characters, setting and conflict are introduced. The inciting action establishes the conflict and moves us into rising action. • Rising action: the tension in the story builds as the conflict is developed. • Crisis/turning point: an event or decision that determines events to bring about the climax. • Climax: the highest point of tension or action. • Denouement: the tension is released (sometimes called ‘falling action’) • Resolution: the main conflict is resolved.

Conflict Conflict is the clash of actions, ideas, desires or wills.
Conflict looks different from one story to another • person vsperson: a character has a conflict with another person • person vsself: a character has a conflict with some element in her/his own nature; maybe physical, mental, emotional, or moral. • person vsenvironment/other: a character faces challenges from an ‘external’ force, e.g. God, fate, nature, ‘aliens’, technology
