What are homonyms? • Homonyms are words that sound the same, and are spelled the same, but have different meanings. Example: Stalk 1. The corn stalk is tall. 2. Paparazzi stalk famous people. Homo = same Nym = name
Whole Group Practice: Why are they the same? On your own sheet of paper, circle the Homonym. Then, write how they are different.
Clue: A flower found in your eye. What is it? iris
Clue: Look at this to see what the time is. What is it? watch
Clue: Your money is not in danger when it is in this. What is it? safe
Clue: Press down hard with your foot to stick this on the envelope. What is it? stamp
Clue: A learner in the middle of your eye. What is it? pupil
Clue: A place where a group of fish learn. What is it? school
Clue: A keen supporter to cool you down. What is it? fan
Clue: Move your hand as the water comes in. What is it? wave
Glue the long piece of wood. What is it? stick
A tree in the middle of your hand. What is it? palm

Self-Practice 1 & 2 Make your own Homonym clues! Make up your own clue using two of the definitions below: Cannon: 1. A large, heavy piece of artillery formerly used in warfare 2. (Billiards or snooker) A stroke in which the cue ball strikes two balls successfully 3. Collide with something forcefully or at an angle
Pair Poster Get with a partner that read the same Anchor Book as you. Create a poster using a clue that relates to your Anchor Book. You must have two pictures, 1 clue, and the Answer next to each picture, explaining how it connects to your Anchor Book. Your names, period, and date must be on the poster somewhere. BOTH OF YOU HAVE TO WRITE ON THE PAPER!!!
Sample Poster:Clue: One is used to cook food the other is when someone investigates you. • Pony Boy gets grilled by his older brothers when he stays out late. • Pony Boy probably grilled his food when he was in hiding.
