Overall Policy Objective • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) underpins almost all engineering activities and influences our daily life more than ever in a time that the number of EMC problems are rapidly increasing. EMC was and is often addressed on an adhoc basis, and there is simply no long term scientific programme in this area. It is the our view that long-term fundamental work of strategic nature in EMC is required now to support emerging technologies. The overall policy objectives of the European Technology Network for Sustainable Electromagnetic Environments are to: • establish a clear strategic vision on EMC and EMF • strengthen EMC innovation • enhance international cooperation • improve cooperation between industry and research institutes • alleviate fragmentation in research • In short: To facilitate, co-ordinate and accelerate the development of technologies that create a future electromagnetic compliant society. www.emc-esd.nl click on ETN-SEE

Message from Christos Christopoulos to the Core Team, dated 13 February 2006 Dear Colleagues, I had a long telephone conversation with Dr Pantalos earlier this morning. He sounded very supportive and well disposed towards our initiative. I explained to him our need for a presence on the CORDIS site and he was supportive in principle. He told me that largely on his initiative a meeting will be held on Feb 28th in the morning to push this idea of Associated TPs. He felt that this initiative is gaining ground and he was positive that that we will get the "green light" on the 28th. One of the ways that the Assoc TP will recognised is via a web presence in the same way as the other TPs where we can put forward our research agendas etc. He thanked me for ringing him and putting forward this idea of web presence as this was something that he could put to the meeting as a positive and practical way to proceed. He also invited me to make any other practical suggestions for items to bring forward to the meeting on the 28th. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS TO PASS ON TO ME??? He asked me to ring him on the afternoon of the 28th to tell me what the outcome of the meeting is.
He said that we are more advanced than most in the setting up of an Assoc. TP. He suggested that we wait until the 28th before we press for web presence etc. I also gently raised the funding situation to facilitate our activities. He said that as with all TPs there is no direct funding but that we could try CA or SSA. He was not however expert in these and someone in DG research may know more. All in all this was a positive conversation but real progress has to wait for the meeting on the 28th. Best regards Christos 13/2/2006
These are my notes from my conversation with Pantalos (28 Feb 2006): • It seems that DG Research is in agreement to set up Assoc TPs • They will prepare a general note to be sent to all services regarding the rules for the Associated TPs • There is an important event to attend 4-5 May in Vienna where the Commissioner will be present (Potocnik). We can take part 3-4 members (one or two from Industry, one SME, on University) • He recommends that in the next 2 weeks we produce a status report which cross-references our TP to existing TPs. We need to put on paper clear ideas! • We must start high-level discussions to inform other TPs of our activities and begin serious networking. To my question on web presence he told me that it was not raised at the meeting-there was no time to discuss it. • He recommends that we develop a couple of ideas to push forward with DG Research (one could be the Web presence and the other ways to enhance the visibility of the Assoc TPs • He told me that he is taking over another activity so his substitute for this work is Thomas Heinemeier form Germany. The person to contact in DG Research is Shaun O’Reagain from Ireland (tel: +322 2966864)
In my view we must take the following URGENT actions: • Speed-up the consultation with stake holders and finalise the status report asap but not later than at the conclusion of our meeting in Barcelona. • Establish contact with DG Research (the new people) and press on our need to get access to web and other means of enhancing visibility and our capacity to network with other TPs. • Finalise 3-4 names to attend the Vienna meeting in May and send them asap to Pantalos and/or others to get an invitation. Attendance is by invitation only and if we delay it may be too late to get a place. I am available to go but I cannot be in Vienna before 09:45 Thursday 4th May. • CC-02/03/2006
