  1. Write Circulatory System at the top of page 56 in your journal • Glue the picture down in a corner and label the following parts • Anything highlighted must be written in your journal Circulatory System

  2. Circulatory System • Function of the Circulatory System: • To transport oxygen and nutrients to cells • To transport wastes away from cells • To transport chemicals throughout the body

  3. Circulatory System Organs of the Circulatory System • Heart • Blood Vessels (Arteries, Veins, Capillaries) • Blood

  4. Blood Vessels • Arteries - carry carries blood away from the heart

  5. Blood Vessels • Veins – carry blood toward the heart

  6. Blood Vessels • Capillaries - microscopic blood vessels that connect arteries and veins (oxygen & nutrients are exchanged with waste products in cells)

  7. Composition of Blood 55% Plasma 2% White Blood Cells & Platelets 43% Red Blood Cells

  8. Parts of the Blood • Red Blood Cells-carry oxygen and carbon dioxide • White Blood Cells-kill germs and fights infection • Platelets-clot blood • Plasma-liquid part of blood Platelets: helps blood clot to stop bleeding White blood cell: fights germs Red blood cell: Carry O2 and CO2

  9. Blood • Oxygen Rich Blood: • When blood is carrying a lot of oxygen • Oxygen Poor Blood: • When blood is carrying little oxygen

  10. Circulation of Blood A represents the exchange of O2 & CO2 in the lungs. The blood is pumped to the lungs to pick up oxygen. The oxygen diffuses from the lungs into the blood and the carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the lungs. The oxygen-poor blood becomes oxygen-rich. B represents the exchange of O2 and CO2 in body cells. The oxygen diffuses into body cells and carbon dioxide diffuses out of body cells. The oxygen-rich blood becomes oxygen-poor.
