Community Service Community service projects are meaningful, planned, organized, and voluntary efforts designed to address a problem or need in the community. The community service project chosen should also reflect a student’s personal interests and skills. To complete the community service graduation requirements for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, a student must complete a community service project of a minimum 100 hours between grades 9 and 12. 9th Grade: 100 hours 10th Grade: 75 hours 11th Grade: 50 hours 12th Grade: 25 hours The community service forms can be found on our website.
Athletics (Female and Male)Director: Mr. Moises Rivera Athletes must: Maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average. Have a current Athletic Physical Packet. Purchase school insurance for $30, (Football requires $76). Have less than 10 absences and 20 tardies to school.

DRESS CODE 2015 - 2016 Shirts ~ Shirt with collar. NO oversized knee-length shirts. NO T-shirts. Pants ~ Any color pants or jeans; no holes or rips in pants . NO capris or shorts. NO athletic, nylon, sweat pants, leggings or knitted-type shorts or pants. NO skirts or skorts. Dress Code Closed shoes are required. No sandals, Crocs or open heels. NO hats, caps or other headwear is permitted. Jackets may NOT be worn with the hoodies. Spirit Days Spirit Days will be used as Fundraisers for PTSA and other groups/clubs.
Attendance Policy • Every student is expected to: • Be present in school each and every day (180 days). • Attend class as scheduled. • Arrive at school and classes on time. • Demonstrate appropriate behavior and readiness to learn.
Attendance Policy • All absences are considered unexcused until documentation is provided. • Parent/guardian must provide an excuse for the absence. • The form must be submitted to the attendance office within 3 days of the student’s return to school. • Parent notes must contain the student name, ID number, dates of absences, and reason.
Excessive Absences • Once a student reaches 11 absences, a parent/guardian will need to meet with an administrator. • OFFICIAL DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED • Doctor’s note with specific dates indicated • Hospital release papers • Official accident report • Court documents with specific dates • At this point, a note written by a parent/guardian will no longer suffice. • Without official documentation, all absences after 10 will remain unexcused. • Students who have a total of six (6) days at an alternative to suspension program and/or 10 or more unexcused absences and/or 20 or more days tardy/excused early will not be allowed to participate in extra-curricular activities. 10 or more unexcused absences must be taken to the Athletic Director.
Excused Absences • Personal Illness • Death in the immediate family • Immigration or Court Appearance • Medical Appointment/ Hospitalization • Religious Observation • School Sponsored Events • Personal family trips, vacations, or events are not considered excusable absences.
No Credit Policy Any student who accrues 5 or moreunexcused absences in a semester course or 10 or moreunexcused absences in an annual course will have the credit withheld and may need to repeat the course.
Tardy Policy Students are tardy after 7:20 a.m. Students must report to the attendance office when tardy.. Continuous tardies will result in disciplinary action and loss of activity privileges. After 7:45, students need to report to the attendance office to secure an admit. The first nine tardies may be excused with a parent escort or valid excuse note (doctor’s note, court papers, appointment notes). Once a student accumulates ten (10) tardies, notes or parent escorts are no longer accepted, and the tardies will remain unexcused. Make-up work may not be accepted for time missed because of tardiness.
Attendance Office Hours are from 7:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Admits can be obtained before school, during lunch and after school. Sign-outs are not allowed after 1:50 p.m.
Code of Student Conduct A copy of the Code of Student Conduct is available at: http://ehandbooks.dadeschools.net/policies/90/ Students are responsible to adhere to all policies at all times.
Discipline Policy Continued defiance of school authority and policies and/or serious violations of The Code of Student Conduct may result in disciplinary action. Miami Sunset Senior High School employs a progressive discipline policy in accordance with district policy which includes warnings, parent conferences, work detail, detentions, Saturday school, and indoor suspension (SCSI). Disciplinary action is assigned on an individual case by case basis based on the infraction and student history. An overview of Sunset’s progressive discipline plan can be found on our website.
Electronic Device Policy What is BYOD? Bring Your Own Device allows students to use their own technology at specified times during the day to enhance the learning experience. Examples of the types of technology which can be used are Windows laptops/tablets, Mac laptops, Android tablets, and iPads.. All electronic devices must be turned off and out of sight between 7:20 a.m. and 2:20 p.m. unless they are being used during class with the permission of the teacher or administrator. Any visible electronic devices are subject to confiscation. Electronic devices that have been confiscated may be picked up between 7:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the main office by a parent only. Sunset is not responsible for any lost, broken or stolen electronic devices.

Financial Obligations • All financial obligations incurred by school fees and/or textbook loss or damage must be paid in the school’s Treasurer’s office.
