  2. Gifted and talented revenue provides school districts with $12 times a district’s student population. • Uses of this revenue:1. Identify gifted and talented students.2. Provide educational programs for gifted and talented students.3. Provide staff development to prepare teachers to best meet the unique needs of gifted and talented students

  3. Minnesota Department of Education DefinitionGifted and talented children and youth are those students with outstanding abilities identified at preschool, elementary, and secondary levels. These students are capable of high performance when compared to others of similar age, experience, and environment, and represent the diverse populations of our communities. These are students whose potential requires differentiated and challenging educational programs and/or services beyond those provided in the general school program.

NAGC StandardsNational Association for Gifted Children • to provide training for school staff and address the awareness of the characteristics, needs, identification methods and appropriate teaching strategies for the gifted student. • to provide differentiated instruction and stimulate higher level processes through analytical, critical, and creative thinking strategies. • to implement and maintain system-wide identification procedures. • to provide an ongoing process measuring student progress and program effectiveness. • to ensure equitable access for all students regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status or disability. • to effectively communicate, encourage involvement, and promote advocacy for the program with students, parents and the community. • to continue to engage in professional development opportunities to maintain expertise in gifted education.

  6. NWEA testing (Spring of 2011) indicated about 18% of our students in grades 3-5 achieved in the 92nd and above percentile in Reading and/or Math.

  8. ~The mission of the Albert Lea Gifted and Talent Development Program is to maximize the potential and meet the unique educational and affective needs of our gifted and talented students. ~Our district is committed to providing challenging opportunities, intellectual stimulation, and differentiated programming for these students.

Identification • Achievement NWEA scores (92% and above) • Aptitude SAGES-2: Screening Assessment for Gifted Elementary and Middle School Students • Parent or Teacher Referral PIP (parent inventory for finding potential SRBCSS – Scales for Rating the Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students

  11. Long-range Plan and “Wishes” • Extended time with identified students • Expand Junior Great Books groups • Continued and Increased differentiation in classrooms • Addition of competitive opportunities (Future City, Science Olympiad)
