Idaho Constitution • Article III section 6 provides for the election of sheriff, and section 11 states that county officers shall perform such duties as shall be described by law.
I.C. 31-2202 • Sheriff is the primary law enforcement officer in each county irrespective of state and local police. (However, I.C. 31-2227 states that the sheriff and prosecutor share the duty of primary law enforcement officer ) • Enforcement is in all unincorporated areas and cities where they don’t have a police department • Attend all courts • Manage the county jail • Serve all process • Issue driver’s licenses • Maintain a record of all stolen vehicles • Work with the State Police to enforce traffic and live stock laws • Investigate all cases involving missing children • Upon order of Governor, prevent the unauthorized importation of wild or domestic omnivores or carnivores
