Sheriff Variations • Over 3,000 Sheriff’s Offices in the U.S. • Some sheriffs are appointed such as Miami-Dade where two are appointed, one law enforcement and the other jail • Some sheriff’s offices have been stripped of traditional duties and only serve legal process • Some states don’t have the Office of Sheriff: Alaska and Connecticut • Average size is 28.5 • A sheriff in Delaware can’t make an arrest-currently under litigation

  3. Idaho Constitution • Article III section 6 provides for the election of sheriff, and section 11 states that county officers shall perform such duties as shall be described by law.

  4. I.C. 31-2202 • Sheriff is the primary law enforcement officer in each county irrespective of state and local police. (However, I.C. 31-2227 states that the sheriff and prosecutor share the duty of primary law enforcement officer ) • Enforcement is in all unincorporated areas and cities where they don’t have a police department • Attend all courts • Manage the county jail • Serve all process • Issue driver’s licenses • Maintain a record of all stolen vehicles • Work with the State Police to enforce traffic and live stock laws • Investigate all cases involving missing children • Upon order of Governor, prevent the unauthorized importation of wild or domestic omnivores or carnivores

Other Duties and Things • Search and Rescue, I.C. 31-2229 • Issue CCW licenses, I.C. 18-3302 • Register sex offenders, I.C. 18-8302 • Enforce Fish and Game laws • Investigate fires where no fire district is established • Dispatch Centers and the Emergency Communications Act, I.C. 31-4801 • Safe Boating Act, I.C. 67-7028 • Snowmobile , OHV and boating programs

ISA • Idaho Sheriffs’ Association – Jail Inspections, Victim Services, Training, Outdoor Marijuana Grow Eradication, Legislation, Scholarships and other stuff (Social Security Administration Incentive Program) • Four major committees: Jail Standards and Training, Operations, Training and Legislative • Work closely with IAC and ICRMP
