BS 8519- Code of PractiseSelection and Installation of Fire Resistant Power and Control Cable Systems for Life Safety and Fire Fighting Applications- Code of Practise Name of the speaker Jobtitle Location – Date www.drakauk.com
B.S. 8519:2010 • New Code of Practice for the selection of fire-resistant cables and systems for life safety and fire fighting applications • Provides guidance and recommendations and links to Approved Document B (Part B) of the building regulations, B.S. 9999, B.S. 7846 cable standard and tests defined in B.S. 8491 and BSEN 50200:2006 • Recommends cable survival times and installed cable system requirements • Does not take precedence over B.S. 5839 for alarm systems and B.S. 5266 for emergency lighting
Background to B.S.8519:2010 • Modern building technology involves “Fire Safety Engineering” • Active Fire Safety systems such as sprinklers and smoke evacuation systems are required to operate both in evacuation and fire –fighting phases. • In this context it was considered that the Cable performance requirements contained in BS 7846 were inadequate for certain applications. • Smoke ventilation systems • Electrically operated fire doors and curtains • Pressurization fans • Sprinklers and wet-riser pumps
B.S.8519:2010 • Complex Buildings have a Fire Safety Engineering Infrastructure • Greater emphasis on Circuit Integrity • Cables must have a suitable performance level • New Tests have been introduced
B. S. 8519:2010 • Defines new Fire Performance (Circuit Integrity) requirements for Power cables • Does not cover: • Cables < 20mm in Diameter • Wiring systems installed in Conduit • Wiring systems for Alarm and Sounder circuits (BS 5839) • Also defined are requirements for cable fixings and joints, diverse cable routes, and cable support systems
Cable Classes -Ratings • B S 8519 defines two types of application: • Life Safety systems – Systems that must remain operational to alert, evacuate, and protect people • Category 1- 30 minutes • Category 2- 60 minutes • Fire Fighting systems - Active systems for protecting and assisting fire-fighters • Category 3- 120 minutes • 3 Categories of cable performance are defined
Fire survival times: Category 1 For means of escape 30 minutes fire survival time, cables shall: • For Power cables >20mm meet B.S. 8491 for 30 minutes • For Control cables meet BSEN 50200 test for 30 minutes
Fire survival times: Category 2 • For means of escape 60 minutes fire survival time cables shall: • For Power cables >20mm meet B.S.8491 for 60 minutes. • For Control cables meet BSEN 50200 test for 60 minutes and for 120 minutes with water spray as per BS 8434-2
Fire survival times: Category 3 For Fire Fighting 120 minutes fire survival time cables shall • For Power cables >20mm meet B.S. 8491 for 120 minutes • For Control cables meet BSEN 50200 test for 120 minutes and the 120 min survival period when tested In accordance with Annexe B of BS 8519 (115 minutes fire and impact at 930°C followed by 5 minutes of fire, water and impact)
BSEN 50200 + water Spray Test is integrated But: Impact is indirect Water is applied via a sprinkler head not a pressure hose The Fire Tests BSEN 50200
Based on the BS 7846 test but is Integrated. Constant temperature attack at 842°C Direct mechanical impact = 10 N Pressure Water jet (6.3mm hose,12.5l/m) during final 5 minutes of test - to simulate fire hose The Fire Tests- BS 8491
Draka’s Offering Firetufpowerplus utilises additional fire barriers and new Halogen Free, Low Smoke material technology, compared to B.S.7846 F2 cable FTP. It has conventional wire armour design, and complies with B.S.7846, and B.S.8491 to the 120 minute rating (category 3) FTP120 has been independently tested by LPCB and has a full approval from BASEC
Approved Document B –Protected Power Circuits • Critical electrical Circuits must function • Cables must be sufficiently robust • Cable routes, physical protection and cable supports and joints, if used, shall not reduce functionality in the event of fire.
FTP120 now LU Approved • Draka is now the only manufacturer with LU approval for BS 8519 applications • LU are now promoting BS 8519 as the optimum level of safety, and this level of safety is being specified into ALL LU designs
