  1. KEY CONCEPTThe overall process of photosynthesis produces sugars that store chemical energy.

  2. Photosynthetic organisms are producers. • Producers are organisms that make their own source of chemical energy. • Photosynthesis captures energy from sunlight to make sugars.

  3. Light Absorption • Sun gives off visible light (ROYGBIV) • Unabsorbed light reflects to our eyes • Most green light not absorbed by leaves • Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight • Absorb mostly reds and blues

  4. chloroplast leaf cell leaf • In plants, chlorophyll is found in chloroplasts.

  5. Photosynthesis in plants occurs in chloroplasts. • Photosynthesis takes place in two parts of chloroplasts. • Granum • Are stacks of thylakoids 2. Stroma (fluid around the grana)

  6. There are two types of reactions that take place in Photosynthesis. First: Light-dependent reactions Second: Light-independent reactions (dark reactions).

  7. First: • The light-dependent reactions capture energy from sunlight. • take place in thylakoids • water and sunlight are needed • chlorophyll absorbs energy • energy is transferred along thylakoid membrane then to light-independent reactions • oxygen is released O2 H2O

  8. Second: • The light-independent reactions make sugars. • take place in stroma • needs carbon dioxide from atmosphere • use energy from light dependent reactions to build a sugar in a cycle of chemical reactions (Calvin’s cycle) energy CO2

  9. granum (stack of thylakoids) 1 chloroplast sunlight 6H2O 6O2 2 energy thylakoid stroma (fluid outside the thylakoids) 6CO2 1 six-carbon sugar C6H12O6 3 4 • The equation for the overall process is: 6CO2 + 6H2O  C6H12O6 + 6O2
