McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act • The Law – Reauthorized in 2001 • Required local liaisons in all LEAs • Educational Rights of Homeless Children and Youth: • Immediate enrollment • Access to the same public education provided to all students • Continue enrollment in school of origin • Receive transportation to school of origin • Automatic enrollment in Free & Reduced Lunch Program and Title I services • Challenge decision on school selection (dispute process)

District FIT Liaison Roles & Responsibilities • Provide academic advocacy • Work with families to assist with enrollment, transportation and academic support • Inform families of their rights under the McKinney-Vento Homeless AssistanceAct • Collaborate with WORD to identify families that qualify for services • Determine and verify eligibility

District FIT LiaisonRoles & Responsibilities • Educate district administrators and staff on McKinney-Vento • Train FRC and FIT Coordinators on the provisions of the McKinney-Vento Act • Distribute necessary information and materials to buildings to provide to families: • Brochures • Posters • Booklets

  5. District FIT Liaison Roles & Responsibilities • Work closely with principals when extenuating circumstances arise • Assist with writing enrollment decision letters when it’s determined a family is not eligible for McKinney-Vento • Facilitate the dispute resolution process • Work closely with OPI to address questions that arise due to unique circumstances
