Welcome to the Field Program The field education program is known as the signature pedagogy for the social work program. Field is the place where you experience real life situations. Here you learn how to integrate your knowledge into practice. You will receive valuable information and develop social work skills as you work alongside a professional social worker and other staff in your placement. The field faculty is committed to providing you with the best opportunity for your learning experience and supporting you while you are in the field. Arlene F. BEGINNING THE FIELD PROCESS • Read this entire PowerPoint. • Complete the Student Field Information Sheet and submit to Tod Marshall at tmarsha5@fau.edu or bring to the social work administrative office in SO 303 (Boca campus). • You will be notified to complete an application in theIPT database (http://www.alceasoftware.com/alcea/index.html). • After completing your application you will be contacted by email with additional directions regarding your application and additional forms to complete. • You will be contacted to schedule a face-to-face interview with a School of Social Work Field Faculty. • At the interview, the Field Faculty will refer you to an agency. • You will schedule and attend your interview at your placement.
What Level Are You? Foundation Students • First year MSW students enter the MSW program with little to no course work in social work and do not qualify for the Advanced Standing Program. • Full time students will complete their degree requirements in two years, completing their internship each year that they are in the program. • Part time students will complete their degree requirements in four years completing their internship in the second and fourth year. • Students must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution. • This placement is not considered a clinical placement.
What Level Are You? Concentration and Advanced Standing Students • Students have completed the Foundation year courses or have been accepted into the advanced standing program. • Part time students will complete this internship in their fourth year. • Full time students will complete this internship in their second year. • Advanced Standing students have completed a BSW within the last five years and have a gpa above 3.5. The Foundation year is waived for advanced standing students. If accepted they are allowed to enter the MSW program at the Concentration level. • This placement is considered a clinical placement.
Field Dates Foundation • Your placement will start Sept. 15, 2014and continue until Dec. 12, 2014 • You will have vacation and will not be allowed to be at your internship from Dec. 14, 2014 through Jan. 4, 2015 • You will return to the same agency on Jan. 5, 2015 and continue until April 3, 2015 • The earliest you can end your field is the week of April 3, 2015
Field Dates – Concentration & Advanced Standing • Your placement will start Sept. 1, 2014 and continue until Dec. 12, 2014 • You will have vacation and will not be allowed to be at your internship from Dec. 13, 2014 through Jan. 4, 2015 • You will return to the same agency on Jan. 5, 2015 and continue until April 17, 2015 • The earliest you can end your field is the week of April 17, 2015
Extended Concentration • Students who work or have special circumstances are allowed to begin field in the summer only by permission of the field director. • Starting field in the summer allows students to decrease their required field hours from 20 to 16 hours weekly.
Field Dates Extended Concentration • Your placement will start July 7, 2014and continue until Dec. 12, 2014 • You will have vacation and will not be allowed to be at your internship from Dec. 13, 2014 through Jan. 4, 2015 • You will return to the same agency on Jan. 5, 2015 and continue until April 17, 2015 • The earliest day you can end your field is the week of April 17, 2015
Starting Early • You may not start your field prior to the first day of field as noted in the previous slides, except in very rare circumstances (ie., mandatory agency orientation) • Any request to start field prior to the first day of the semester must be sent via email to the Coordinator of Field Education Dr. Arlene Kaplan (afkaplan@fau.edu) and written permission must be granted by the Coordinator prior to the requested start date • If permission is granted to start early, the extra hours must be adjusted during the semester as students can not end field early, carry field hours from one semester to the next or take vacation during field • No field hours will be counted prior to the beginning of the semester without written permission from the Coordinator of Field Education
Field Hours - Foundation You will complete: • 400 hours in the Field Agency over two semesters • 16*hours a week field education in a community agency during fall and spring semesters *does not include field seminar hours
Field Hours - Concentration You will complete: • 600 hours in the Field Agency over two semesters • 20* hours a week field education in a community agency during fall and spring semesters *does not include field seminar hours
Field Hours – Extended Concentration You will complete: • 600 hours in the Field Agency over two and a half semesters • 16* hours a week field education in a community agency during summer, fall and spring semesters *does not include field seminar hours
Extended Concentration& Financial Aid Requirements • Those students who are working and need to do their field placement for fewer hours per week will be allowed to spread their placement out over three semesters. • Students who do the extended option will receive an “I” at the end of the summer semester and will not register again for field for the fall semester. • The Office of Financial aid requires that part-time students who are on financial aid must be registered for at least 6 credits each semester. • Therefore , part-time students on financial aid who choose the extended option will be required in the fall to take and pay for an extra 3 credit course in order to qualify for financial aid. Students have the option of enrolling in an additional social work elective or any three credit course in the university. Independent studies by faculty from the School of Social Work will not be approved. • The extended concentration placement is optional. If you are a part-time student and can not afford the additional 3 credits, you will need to enter field in the fall semester.
Day Time Hours Required for Field In order to provide a quality educational experience, and ensure you receive proper supervision, you will need to free up at least 8 daytime hours each week (i.e., 8 AM – 5 PM) Monday through Friday to do your placement.
MSW – Full Acceptance • Only students who have been accepted by the School of Social Work can apply for the field • Individual interviews and referrals to an agency will not occur unless you have been fully accepted by the School of Social Work
MSW FoundationSeminar Class • The seminar course will meet the first time on August 26, 2014, and will continue to meet for the next three weeks of the Fall semester and then meet every other week for the rest of the Fall semester. The schedule for the Spring semester will be provided later in the Fall semester. • The classes will meet each time for 3 hours.
MSW ConcentrationSeminar Class • MSW Concentration students starting in the fall – you will receive an email through your FAU email account prior to the start of the semester with the dates/times the seminar will be held. The first seminar meeting will be held on August 25, 2014. • MSW Extended students starting in the summer – you will be notified via your FAU email when the 3-hour seminar course will meet for the summer 3 seminar. You will join the regular field seminar in the fall and spring semesters.
MSW Field Seminar Course • Attendance is required at all of the field seminars • It is mandatory to attend the first seminar of the semester as this is when many details of your field experience will be explained including, but not limited to expectations, assignments, hours, forms, Blackboard, etc. • Failure to attend seminars may result in additional assignments and ortermination from the course.
Attendance in Field • The only time you will be allowed to take off is during the winter break between semesters. • You will not be allowed to take a vacation during any semester that you are in your internship. No vacations for social work field students
Field Application Process Malpractice/Liability Insurance • Student liability insurance in the amount of $1,000,000/$3,000,000 will be purchased on your behalf by the School of Social Work and will be covered by tuition/clinical lab fees that you pay. • The liability insurance only covers your action while you are a student at your field placement and does not cover you for any other activities or jobs. • Always identify yourself as a student to reduce liability when working in the field
Field Application Process • Application for field will be completed online by the 4th Friday of the Spring semester prior to semester you intend to start field. • You will be contacted via email confirming that your field application has been accepted. You will also be told which field faculty member will interview you. 3. A field faculty member or representative will call you within 10 working days to schedule your interview. 4. You must bring an updated resume and the required four field forms with you when you have your individual interview with the Field Faculty. You will not be referred to an agency until you have submitted the resume and forms to the Field Faculty.
Field Application Process (Disclosure) • You will need to discuss with the designated FAU Field Faculty if there have been any current or past situations in your life that may impact where you should be placed (i.e., being in recovery, being the victim of domestic violence, having a terminally ill relative, etc). • Students need to self disclose if any agency may represent a conflict of interest situation for the student, the student’s family or significant others (i.e., you or a family member being a client of an agency currently or in the past, working at an agency in the past, donating large sums of money to the agency, family connections at agency, etc).
Field Interview Process (Matched …) • You may be matched with an agency by Field Faculty during the field advisement appointment or shortly thereafter. • Under NO circumstances are you to contact an agency before being given permission to do so. • You need to make an appointment to meet your agency supervisor as soon as you are referred to an agency by your Field Faculty. Don’t delay or you may lose your placement • You may have to drive to an agency outside your immediate community to achieve the best educational opportunity
Field Interview Process (Screenings) • Foundation Students: You will be required to undergo a level 2 background screening at your own expense. • Do not start this process until instructed to do so. • Instructions on how to get this process started is contained in this link: https://www.certifiedbackground.com/online_submission/login.php • Concentration Students: You need to find out from the field agency what screening process (police, drug, TB, etc.) the agency requires and begin the process as soon as they interview and accept you.
Background Screenings • It is mandatory that you disclose all issues regarding arrests, charges (regardless of outcome), or any criminal involvement. • Information should be provided on the field application, the background disclosure form, to the FAU field faculty, and also at the agency interview. • Failure to disclose may cause you to lose your internship, delay in entering field until the next semester, or termination from the MSW program.
Field Interview Process (Impressions) • Dress up for your agency interview – you want to make a good impression. • Ask during the interview about appropriate agency dress in the future.
Agency Interview Process • At your agency interview, the agency supervisor usually will inform you if you are accepted by the agency for your placement • At the end of the interview, you will have the person interviewing you complete the Confirmation of Placement form: http://www.fau.edu/ssw/field-education/orientation-and-internship-placement/field-forms/confirmation-of-placement.pdf. If accepted, be sure to arrange your start date and field schedule with your supervisor during the interview • Once you have arranged the days and hours that you will be at your agency internship, you may not change either the days or hours without the permission and agreement of the agency and the Field Instructor.
After Agency Interview • Immediately following your interview, you must either fax to the Field Faculty who interviewed you or bring in to the Social Work office the signed Confirmation of Placement Form • If the agency does not accept you for placement – call the FAU Field Faculty you interviewed with immediately • Refer to the Field Manual for further information on the placement Process. http://www.fau.edu/ssw/field-education/field-education-manual.pdf
Focus of Placements • All placements will expose you to new populations and new skills • All placements will entail working with micro, mezzo, and macro populations • MSW Foundation students will utilize the Generalist Intervention Model • MSW Concentration students will have a clinical placement

Supervision • The qualified field instructor does not need to be licensed but must have a MSW degree, two years of post graduate social work experience and have taken (or be willing to take) a 16 hour field instructor supervisory training • You must receive a minimum of one hour of individual supervision each week from a qualified field instructor
Problems & Student Success Conference • Notify your seminar instructor of any placement concerns • Try to resolve your problems with your agency field instructor before asking the seminar instructor to intervene • The seminar instructor will usually try to resolve the problem before proceeding to a Student Success Conference • The Student Success Conference is a strength based process (not a disciplinary process) to assist in resolving concerns • Students will usually be asked to a Student Success Conference prior to termination from the field to resolve the problem unless the problem is too severe to be able to be resolved
Termination Examples of Reasons for Termination: • Unethical behavior • Attendance Problems • Inappropriate behavior • Unwillingness to accept feedback and make corrections in work and/or behavior • Walking away/abandoning your placement • Inability to integrate theory and practice

Students’ Responsibility • Turn in all required paperwork on time • Get all necessary information at preplacement interview • Follow through on all tasks in a timely manner • Seek supervision, accept constructive feedback, and take corrective action, when needed • Act in an ethical manner • Take responsibility for being an adult learner
Code of Ethics • Read the Code of Ethics prior to beginning your field placement • Ethical practice in the field will be evaluated based on the NASW Code of Ethics available online at: https://www.socialworkers.org/
