Career Development Plan Jesse Montie LDR610
What have I done? • 25 years of active experience in many facets of theater including: • Acting • Backstage technician • Stage Management • Directing • Properties • Costuming • Lighting • Sound • Technical Direction • Set Construction • Box Office • Bachelor of Arts in Theater/Speech Communications • Educational, Regional and Professional Experience
What am I doing? • In Graduate School for a Masters in Organizational Leadership • Volunteer, work and support local theater venues (i.e. The Croswell Opera House, Francoeur Theater, Stubnitz Theater, Tecumseh Center for the Arts, local area schools, etc.) • Applying for theater internships • Auditioning for summer stocks, national and regional tours, and equity and non-equity auditions • Planning to move to Seattle, Washington to pursue performance and technical theater work
What do I want to do? • Become a professional actor (i.e. Actors Equity, Screen Actors Guild, etc.) • Teach acting and improvisation • Do voice-overs for Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks • Work with special effects makeup • Be a contestant on Syfy’s Face Off • Be financially stable with job security • Build a strong positive acting reputation
The Master Plan • Move to Seattle and audition for local theaters • Attend acting workshops and various performance classes • Audition daily • Find an agent/agency • Update headshots, theater and business resumes • Expand auditioning selections (i.e. monologues, songs, dance techniques, etc.)
Personal Assessments • Jungian 16 Type Personality: ENFP(Extroverted, Intuition, Feeling, Perceptive)—People-orientated, creative, and highly optimistic. • IGS Values Clarification—Top 5 in order: Creative expression, helping others, service to society, integrity, and positive atmosphere. • SDS Holland Assessment: ASE (Artistic, Social, Enterprising) • Career Anchors: SV (Sense of Service, Dedication to a Cause)
Conclusion • The results from the various assessments that I havetaken seem to align with the career choices that I have made towards pursing a career in the performance arts. • While I know the road to success in theater is hard and can be intimidating at times, I know that the end result will be well worth the effort. • Having an optimistic outlook and drive to continue is a key trait in acting. It is not a career for the weak and fragile. It is a known fact among actors that you will get rejected 100 times before you get a consideration. • Between auditioning, preparing to audition, finding new material, reviewing the material that I possess and refining my skills, I definitely have my work cut out for me but am up to the task.
