He is my best friend. • The word a pronoun refers to is its antecedent. • Pronouns have to agree with antecedents in three ways: • Gender • Number • Case

The pronoun in the sentence is serving as the subject. Objective: I have known him for a long time. The pronoun is the object of the sentence. Possessive: I am his best friend. The pronoun is acting like an adjective.
