Protozoans • Protozoa means first animal. • They are the smallest of all animals. • They are made up of one cell.
Protozoans • Protozoans have these structures: • Nucleus: control center • Cell Membrane: gives the cell its shape and regulates the passage of oxygen, carbon dioxide, food, and wastes in and out of the cell • Cytoplasm: jellylike substance inside the cell that contains vacuoles that help with the digestion of food
Protozoans • These structures help the protozoan carry on these necessary life functions: • Get food • Digest food • Get rid of wastes • Move • Get Oxygen • Reproduce
Amoeba • An amoeba has no definite shape. • To move, an amoeba pushes out one side and then another. • To get its food, the pseudopods surround the food particle and gradually take it into the main part of the cell.
Amoeba • The food vacuole digests the food. • The contractile vacuole collects and releases the liquid wastes. • The amoeba reproduces by splitting in half (binary fission). • Amoebas live in freshwater, salt water, damp soil, and in the bodies of animals.

Paramecium • A paramecium is shaped like the sole of a shoe. • To move, the cilia sweep back and forth to move the animal. • To get its food, the cilia help sweep food into the oral groove.
Paramecium • It is more complex than the amoeba. • It has 2 nuclei – One to control reproduction and one for the other life activities. • A paramecium reproduces two ways: • Binary Fission • Conjugation (adhering to another paramecium and exchanging parts of nuclei). • Paramecium live in water.

Euglena • The euglena has characteristics of both plants and animals. • Like a plant, the euglena contains chlorophyll, so it can make its own food. • Like an animal, the euglena can move and seek its own food. It has a nucleus. • Its whip-like tail is called a flagellum.
