This is the 8th conference in the series, but its history spans more than a decade here at Plymouth University. Our very first conference was a one day event, organised largely for local school teachers who were interested in developing their ICT skills. Since those first tentative steps, Pelecon has blossomed into an international three day event which now attracts delegates from every continent, and features world class keynote speakers. Pelecon has also established a great reputation as a friendly, innovative and thought provoking event which many have endorsed, by returning again and again each year. This year, we are pleased to welcome the largest number of invited speakers ever, with keynotes from Donald Taylor, Grainne Conole, Doug Belshaw, Derek Robertson, Karine George, Steven Warburton and Joyce Seitzinger, an after dinner speech from Graham Brown-Martin, and highly engaging Kidsmeet sessions from Bill Lord, Dughall McCormick and Paul Hutson (the Night Zookeeper). Kidsmeet runs on Day 1 and welcomes all families with small children. This year, as always, you are encouraged to use all the technology and social media at your disposal to help amplify and extend the content of the conference beyond its natural geography. All of our keynote and plenary sessions will be live streamed onto the web, and there will be Twitter screens strategically positioned so that all can follow the official conference hashtag#pelc13. We also have a Flickr photo repository where you can share your images associated with Pelecon 2013. I hope you have a great experience this year at Pelecon, and that you will always hold great memories of your time in Plymouth, with great company, thought provoking dialogue and an inspiring environment. Good learning! Steve Wheeler Chair of the Plymouth Enhanced Learning Conference Welcome to Pelecon On behalf of the conference organising committee, I wish you a very warm welcome to Pelecon, to Plymouth University, and to the beautiful South West of England. We hope that while you are here, you will enjoy the rich and diverse culture of the West Country. You will certainly have plenty of opportunities to sample a little of this during the conference, if you take a chance to try our famous clotted cream tea, and also decide to attend our Conference Dinner over at the National Marine Aquarium. The latter is a unique experience, with stunning views and a breathtaking venue in which to dine, network with old friends and new, and enjoy some good live music.
