  1. Hybrid Cards – What’s in your wallet? Presented by: Eric Crowell, University of Minnesota – Twin Cities

  2. What is a Hybrid Card? • This is NOT our hybrid… • A card with multiple media types.

  3. Why hybrid? Separate technologies…separate systems. University of Minnesota: iClass/Mag Stripe Metro Transit: MiFare

  4. at the University of Minnesota Building Access Meal Plan Access Gopher GOLD Declining Balance Print Tenders CBORD Activities We only readiClass CSN…no writing/encoding

  5. Mag Stripe at the University of Minnesota

  6. at the University of Minnesota

  7. Planning Considerations Current systems in place (document “as-is” and propose “to-be” processes) Rolling out to current users Lost Cards Replacement Cards Enrolling new transit customers

  8. Card Testing Request sample cards from vendors. Do they work with current card printing and encoding equipment? Do they work with existing campus infrastructure? (building access, dining, vending, etc.) Will they work on transit? Busses, trains, light-rail, all different types of readers…

  9. Card Testing / Reader Testing Be aware that readers (both stand alone and those in printers) may need to be reflashed / reprogrammed so that theyare not “confused” by the presence of two chips…

  10. Plan the implementation Phased approach vs. “Convert everyone at once”

  11. Plan the implementation Transit must currently encode cards twice… 1st Pass captures the MiFare Card Serial Number (in Transit System) and writes a code to the MiFare chip that indicates that card is valid (via a Batch process). 2nd Pass (done later, when the card is issued and ready to be used) encodes a particular Fare Product onto the card. i.e. Metropass (faculty), U-Pass (students), Go-To Card (casual users).

  12. Plan the implementation Security concerns… VLAN for transit encoding equipment. Who has access to the transit encoding equipment and how are transactions monitored and audited?

  13. Plan the implementation Oh…one more thing… Our transit system is not “real time”/on-line. Busses must pass by a special read/write device in bus garage to download that day’s updates…and this typically only happens in the middle of the night when bus is coming into or leaving bus garage…

  14. Plan the implementation What ifs… Patron gets a replacement card but needs to take bus home that night? Patron graduates, but still has Go-To money on their account? Then loses their card? Patron changes status from a student to a staff (or visa versa)?

  15. Future Considerations… So…now what?
