Leading a meeting Step 1-Example: Before you speak up, assess your listeners’perspective(s): Hu Jin’s boss has asked him to lead a meeting of senior managers from CNPC drilling and production to discuss the BP CEO’s recent speech in China. He faces two potential perspectives: • Jin’s boss and most of his colleagues probably have a positive perspective regarding BP. • One or more colleagues may have a negative perspective on BP.
Leading a meeting Step 2-Example- Beforeyou speak up, determine or know your purpose: Jin: • Wants to convey the key points of the BP CEO’s speech and share the implications for CNPC upstream personnel (connects with his boss’ and some of his colleagues’ perspectives) • Needs to discuss what BP has learned from the Deepwater Horizon accident and, therefore, why BP could be a good strategic partner for CNPC (handles some of his colleagues’ negative perspectives on BP)
Leading a meeting Step 3-Example-State your main point/message at start: Jin: • While BP’s Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico illustrated serious problems in handling safety and risk, • BP’s newly-formed safety and risk organization shows that BP has dramatically revamped its approach. • Therefore, we upstream managers should consider how we can improve our cooperation with BP.
Leading a meeting Step 4-Example-When you speak, use a logic flow to guide you as you speak: Logic flow or the topics Jin will cover: • Global energy situation in 2030 • What BP has learned from Deepwater Horizon incident and how it’s responded • How BP and CNPC can cooperate
