  1. Mixed Methods Research

  2. Mixed Research • Procedures usually found in both: • Quantitative • Qualitative • Done in order to gain a greater understanding of problem studied

  3. Mixed Research • Types • QUAL-quan • a.k.a. Exploratory mixed methods design • The qualitative end comes first • QUAN-qual • a.k.a. Explanatory mixed methods design • Quantitative study done first – determines what is studied and how in qualitative segment

  4. Mixed Research • Types • QUAN-QUAL • a.k.a. Triangulation mixed methods design • Integrates both methods and gives equal weight to both types of data collected

  5. Mixed Research • Differences in Mixed Research relate to: • Priority given to either approach • Sequence in which approach has data collected first • Data analysis techniques used

  6. Mixed Research • Characteristics that classify mixed methods • Terms such as quantitative and qualitative, mixed methods, integrated, triangular are used • Look at the data collected

  7. Mixed Research • Evaluating mixed methods • Knowing the sequence will help you classify it • Take note of the data collection and sampling methods used

  8. Mixed Research • Additional questions: • Use at least one qualitative and one quantitative research method? • Include a rationale for using mixed method? • Classification of the type of mixed method?

  9. Mixed Research • Additional questions: • Describe priority given to data collection strategies? • Includes both qualitative and quantitative research questions? • Data collection techniques? • Appropriate data analysis techniques for type of mixed methods design?

  10. Mixed Methods Design Characteristics • Includes terms “Quantitative and Qualitative, Mixed Methods, Integrated, or Triangular.” • Researcher describes combination of methods applied.

  11. Mixed Methods Design Characteristics • Data collection section • Kinds of data collected • Narrative and numerical data • Questions are stated for both Quantitative and Qualitative approaches

  12. Mixed Methods Design Characteristics • Researcher indicates: • Sequence in which • Qualitative and Quantitative data was collected • How data were analyzed and strategies used

  13. Mixed Methods Design Characteristics • Researcher’s writing is balanced • In terms of: • Qualitative and Quantitative approaches
