What are you going to study? “If cars are a marker of social status, what role does advertising play in demonstrating this?” I am going to look at the following areas within my question: • Does advertising change due to social effects? For example, during the recession. • The different types of cars and the type of social class they represent. Why do they represent different classes and how does advertising portray this? • Why do certain brands advertise and others don’t? BMW, Mercedes and Audi all advertise but Porsche, Ferrari and Bugatti don’t.
Why are you studying this? • I am a massive fan of the car brand Porsche. • Adverts really interest me too. The way in which they can grab hold of a consumer and make them believe that they need a certain product just through some images and a bit of text. • Combine the two and there is a career that I wish to venture into. • Marketing for Porsche. • In order to this though I feel I need to know more about the advertising industry and how the motor industry use it.
How are you going to study? To find out the answer to my dissertation question I will need to use different methodologies. The methodologies I am going to use for my research are as follows: • Semi-structured reflective interview • Content Analysis • Textual analysis • Secondary analysis of data • Triangulated approach
How are you going to protect the people you study? • To protect people or companies that will be used in my study I will: • Keep them anonymous, • Make sure they clearly understand what I intend to do with any shared information, • Have witnesses to any conversations or information that is sent, • Have consent from the person or company.
Who else has done this? So far throughout my research I haven’t been able to find any theorists who have previously studied the same area as me. However I have been able to find books and a few articles/webpages that have looked at advertising in the motor-industry. • http://pzrservices.typepad.com/advertisingisgoodfo you automotive_industry_advertising/ • http://www.nma.co.uk/opinion/industry opinion/motorindustry-needs-to-catch-up-with-others use-of-emarketing/3026763.article
