Understanding the Respiratory System: Essential Components and Functions

Explore the intricate workings of the respiratory system, from the Epiglottis and Alveoli to the Trachea and Bronchial Tubes. Learn how the Pleura, Pharynx, and Diaphragm play crucial roles in oxygenating the body and expelling carbon dioxide. Delve into the complexities of the Nasal Cavity, Mouth, and Thyroid Cartilage as they contribute to the respiratory process.

  1. Respiratory System taking in oxygen and giving off carbon dioxide

  2. Epiglottis – small flap of cartilage that keeps liquids from entering trachea Alveoli – Tiny sacs in the lungs that blood runs through and air is absorbed Pleura – Fluid Layer that Protects the lungs from rubbing on the ribs 1. Pharynx - Connects the nose and mouth to the trachea Trachea – Passage for air to go from mouth to lungs Nasal Cavity – opening where air is allowed to enter and leave Mouth – opening where air is allowed to enter and leave Bronchioles – small branches of the bronchus 2. Bronchial Tubes – Split air passageway into two 3. Right Lung – Processes half of the incoming air Diaphragm – Muscle that controls the lungs Thyroid Cartilage – protects thyroid gland Left Lung – Absorbs half of the incoming air Nasal Cavity Pharynx Mouth Epiglottis Thyroid Cartilage Bronchial Tubes Trachea Left Lung Right Lung Pleura Bronchioles Alveoli Diaphragm
