Why FYE? • Research at BC shows that those who actually complete FYE are more successful than those who don’t. • FYE is an opportunity to obtain one college-level credit in an environment where you can learn more about Bellevue College and yourself.
Student Introductions • In groups of 4-5, answer the following questions: • What is your name? • Why did you choose to come to Bellevue College? • How would you describe your current life outside of school? (For example, are you working? Do you take care of family members? What other obligations do you have in addition to school?) • What excites you most about starting college? • What makes you nervous about starting college? • Which people in your life do you feel support you most as a student? • What strategies do you think you will use when order to reach your goals in college?
FYE Syllabus • Who has ever had a syllabus for a class before? • What is a syllabus? • How is it useful?
FYE Syllabus • What is a syllabus and why is it important? • Document (contract) that typically includes: • Instructor Expectations • Learning Outcomes for the course • Outline of topics • Assignments • Grading Requirements • Due dates and dates for exams
FYE Syllabus • At Bellevue College (and in college in general), a syllabus is a contract between you and your instructor. • It explains what you will learn as a result of the course, important policies, and it provides a timeline of important dates and deadlines for assignments. • By remaining in the course, you are accepting your part of the “contract.”
FYE Syllabus • Syllabus Reminders: • It is your responsibility to know the dates and deadlines • If your syllabus does not list dates and deadlines, ask your instructor • Write all the important dates for your classes on a single calendar • Keep your syllabus in a place you can access it easily
Differences Between College, High School, and the Workplace • What differences do you think exist between college and high school and college and work?
Goal Setting • Setting a goal is very useful, even if the results are not what you had intended. Goals help you decide what you want and how you are going to get there. • Goals are specific, attainable, and something that you want. They can be short term, long term, whatever. • Think about what you’d like to get out of • Your FYE experience and • Your Bellevue College experience. Brainstorm some goals for both on page 4 of your manual.

Keys to your Academic Success: BC Policies • These slides provide an overview of important BC policies that can assist you in your academics. • Be sure to think about your own personal responsibility as it relates to these policies.
Online Services • Need to reprint your schedule? Pay your tuition and fees? Check your waitlist? Get a transcript? CANVAS • Canvas is Bellevue College’s “Learning Management System” or “LMS.” • It allows instructors to build and maintain a secure “classroom” to share course content, communicate with students, provide online learning activities and assessments, and keep track of their students’ progress.
BC’s Academic Standard Policy • As a student, you are required to maintain a quarterly and cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0. • The following slide outlines what happens if your cumulative and quarterly GPAs fall below a 2.0.
