Lexicology is a branch of linguistics concerned with the signification and application of words. Just as Mr. Webster’s work yielded the dictionary that bears his name, modern words have their own history and are the product of other languages; the source language of a word is known as its etymology. Lexikos, which comes from Greek, is the source of modern word lexicology. It is also the source of lexicon, more commonly known as a dictionary.
