  2. Purpose of Appraisal in NHS • The purpose of NHS Appraisal Scheme is to improve patient care through motivating people and identifying potential • “… is a positive process to give GPs feedback on their past performance, to chart their continuing progress and to identify development needs.”

  3. Key Achievements to date • BKW PCT achieved 100% appraisal of all principals in 2002-2006 and of all non-principals from 2003 onwards. – First PCT to achieve standard. • Wirral PCT achieving 100% status since reorganisation. • Large pool of GP’s. • Locally developed training for appraisers.

  4. Wirral Perspective 2006-07 • BWW Locality – Achieved 100% coverage including backlog from previous year. • Implemented single pool of appraisers and allocation of appraisers. • Improved documentation and communication. • Target 100% achievement of appraisals across Wirral.

PCT Action Points • Locality protected learning events • Educational sessions on CHD, Diabetes, CKD, Dermatology, Heart Failure • Mental Health • Respiratory/Spirometry • Use of Diagnostics • Planned sessions on Maternity, Gynaecology, Family Planning, Case Management • Training/Educational sessions in use of equipment – Audiometry, Coagucheck, etc

Summary • Appraisal scheme well established across the whole of the PCT • Achieving 100% of target • Effective as a formative process and may become the tool for revalidation process • Need to explore through pilot newer standards and methodology including 360 degree appraisal • Consider using QOF and PCT benchmarking scores alongside other evidence • Extending a modified scheme to support GPSI’s
